About Us

Established in 1983, the Chinese Association of Tower Hamlets (CATH) is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. It is dedicated to supporting disadvantaged individuals of Chinese heritage in Tower Hamlets and the surrounding areas. The organization was founded by a group of passionate college and secondary school students who recognized a pressing need within their community. Starting as part-time volunteers in a modest, donated space in Tower Hamlets, their early efforts focused on supporting elderly Chinese residents facing significant language barriers and social isolation.

Today, CATH continues to build on its founding values by delivering three core services that reflect the evolving needs of the local Chinese community. These services are designed to enhance individual well-being, preserve cultural heritage, and promote social inclusion—with a strong focus on elderly care, language education, and culturally sensitive support.

CATH’s mission is expressed through the statement:
“Bridging cultures, communities, and generations — creating opportunities for people of Chinese origin and their families to succeed.”

Core Services and Current Activities

1) Home Care Service (Core Service)
CATH’s Home Care Service provides high-quality, culturally appropriate care to elderly and vulnerable members of the Chinese community across London. Services are delivered with sensitivity to cultural values, traditions, and language preferences, ensuring that clients receive respectful and compassionate support in the comfort of their own homes.

2) Elder Chinese Well-being and Support Project
This self-funded initiative offers a range of culturally tailored activities that support the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of elderly Chinese residents. Weekly sessions include Chair Yoga, Chinese Calligraphy, Traditional Chinese Medicine workshops, and a community Table Tennis Club, held every Tuesday. In addition, the project provides essential practical support such as letter translation and advocacy services to assist those navigating language or bureaucratic challenges.

3) Chinese School (Core Service)
Held on weekends at St. Mary and St. Michael Catholic Primary School, CATH’s Chinese School offers classes in both Mandarin and Cantonese for children. The school aims to strengthen cross-generational communication, promote bilingual development, and preserve cultural identity within Chinese families.
