Elder Chinese Well-being and Support Project
This self-funded initiative is dedicated to enhancing the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of elderly members of the Chinese community through a variety of culturally sensitive, engaging, and supportive activities. The project aims to reduce social isolation, promote holistic wellness, and create a welcoming environment where older adults can remain active, connected, and empowered.
Held every Tuesday, weekly sessions include a range of well-received activities such as Chair Yoga for gentle physical exercise, Chinese Calligraphy to foster creativity and preserve cultural heritage, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) workshops to explore holistic health practices, and a community Table Tennis Club that encourages light physical activity and social interaction.
In addition to group activities, the project offers vital practical support services, including letter translation and advocacy assistance, helping elderly individuals navigate language and administrative challenges with confidence and dignity. Please note: This volunteer-run translation and advocacy service is available by appointment only and is not offered as a drop-in service.
Brain Health Club
As part of our ongoing commitment to cognitive and emotional well-being, we continue our valued partnerships with the Alzheimer’s Society and the Community of Refugees from Vietnam in Tower Hamlets (CORV). Together, we host a monthly Brain Health Club, held on the last Thursday of each month at the CORV Centre in Island Gardens. This club supports individuals with memory concerns, early signs of cognitive decline, and social isolation, as well as their carers and family members. Facilitated by Alzheimer’s Society staff, the club offers cognitive stimulation activities such as arts and crafts, singing, music, and seated exercises. The programme has been well-received and continues to foster a sense of connection and purpose.
Admiral Nurse Clinic Service
In collaboration with Dementia UK and the Chinese Welfare Trust, the Admiral Nurse Clinic Service provides specialist dementia care and support for Chinese and Southeast Asian families across five London boroughs. In Tower Hamlets, the Chinese Welfare Trust’s Admiral Nurse Clinic operates every Tuesday from our centre, offering personalised dementia support in a culturally familiar and trusted environment. Please note: The clinic is available by appointment only and does not accept drop-in consultations.
This long-standing partnership is a critical resource for our community members, staff, and home care team, providing expert guidance on dementia-related challenges. The clinic continues to attract families from across East and Southeast London, who benefit not only from its professional dementia support but also from the broad range of culturally tailored services and activities available at the centre.
Special Events
Throughout the year, we organise a variety of cultural and festive events, including the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, Christmas, and Chinese New Year celebrations. These events provide opportunities for our members to gather and enjoy a meal together in a communal setting, typically in restaurants located in Chinatown. While the centre subsidises a portion of the cost, participants are asked to contribute towards the meal. These events are an important part of fostering community spirit, strengthening cultural ties, and providing a sense of connection for our members.
Important Information:
- All activity sessions are limited in capacity and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Most participants are required to complete a brief online registration form (via Google Forms) before attending. Unfortunately, we are unable to reserve places without a completed registration.
